Burglar Alarms and Home Security Systems

Which Home Alarm System is Right for Me?

DIY or Professional Install

DIY

A DIY alarm is often cheaper and simpler to install but does have its pitfalls. If you require a burglar alarm that is connected to the police you will often need a professionally installed system. One exception to this is Simplisafe, which offers a £20/month professional monitoring package. However, if you are looking for an alarm provider that is NSI or SSAIB certified you will need to opt for professional installation.

Professional Alarm Installation

Professional alarm installation always begins with a no-obligation on-site consultation (this takes about 30mins). Every home is different so a professional will assess your home and recommend a personalised home security package, that covers all the weak spots at your property. Some alarm companies will then install your package in 24 hours. Get a no-obligation quote now.

Wired OR Wireless

Wired Alarm System

Wired alarm systems are commonly considered more sturdy and reliable. However, Wired alarms are usually more expensive to install as this is carried out by a professional and requires moving of carpets and drilling to hide the cables. If you opted for a wired system then ensure the alarm meets BS 4737 standards. You can learn more about the difference between wired and wireless alarms here.

Wireless Alarms

Wireless alarms are usually easier and cheaper to install, as there is no hard wiring involved or need to lift up carpets.  They are also more aesthetically pleasing to have around your home, with no wires over the floors and walls. Wireless systems are also portable which is extremely useful if you are looking to move home, renovate or are a renter. Many wireless alarms have now incorporated the features of wired alarms and are being used more by large national providers with police monitoring included in the package. Get a quote now.

Professional or Self-monitoring

Monitored Alarm System

A monitored burglar alarm will not only notify you of an intruder but also notify an alarm receiving centre (ARC) if the alarm is activated, to send out the appropriate emergency services if necessary.

It is a sad fact that today, a huge number of alarms go either unnoticed or simply ignored. With a monitored burglar alarm you can ensure this doesn’t happen.

For a monitored home security system a monthly fee would be required and is usually paid directly to the alarm provider.

Self-monitored Alarm System

A Self-monitored alarm will not notify a monitoring centre, and therefore will not notify emergency services if it is triggered. However, the alarm can notify of an intrusion in multiple ways.

Most commonly it will let off a large sound to notify people within hearing distance of an intrusion and can also scare off the burglar.

Modern technology also means self-monitored alarms can send alerts to your phone, however, it relies on you or somewhere nearby to react accordingly. Check out the best self-monitoring options here.
